The Tarrytown Lakes Park
One of Tarrytown's Most Valuable Recreational Amenities

While Tarrytown is a Hudson River front community with an abundance of outdoor recreational activities centered around the Village’s waterfront, there is also another very valuable recreational hub in Tarrytown, The Tarrytown Lakes Park, which offers a variety of additional outdoor recreational opportunities.

The park consists of two man-made reservoirs (the large Lower Lake and smaller Upper Lake - 20 acres) plus the surrounding 60 acre watershed. The lakes have been decommissioned as a reservoir but the lakes together with the surrounding watershed, now serve as nature preserve and a place for accessible outdoor recreation.

Within the park itself, there are seven clearly blazed trails (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Purple, White & Orange trails).

Possible outdoor activities in the park include:

• Kayaking, fishing & ice skating on the lakes
• Hiking, biking, running, cross country skiing or snow-shoeing on the trails
• Sledding on the hills
• And of course, there is simple passive enjoyment of the great outdoors - i.e. nature study, bird-watching or just sitting on a rock gazing at the lakes.

Besides these recreational opportunities within the park itself, the park also serves as a valuable hub which connects to a variety of additional off-road trails.

On the southeast side is the Tarrytown Lakes Extension Trail which is a spur of the Old Putnam Railroad right-of-way.

The “extension” leads to the North Country Trailway, the South Country Trailway, the Buttermilk Ridge County Preserve and the Glenville Woods Park Preserve.

On the northwest side of the Tarrytown Lakes Park is the orange trail (aka the Andre Brook Trail). This trail descends to the Sleepy Hollow High School athletic field where it connects to the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway (the OCA - a 26 mile NY State north-south trailway). Note: A portion of the connection between the red trail & the orange trail is on Tower Hill/County House Rd.

Essentially, the Tarrytown Lakes Park is contiguous to, or is a part of, 580+ acres of unbroken woodlands in central Westchester.
